SEVERED LIMBS INSTALLATION

Throughout the semester, we worked in a sequence of steps to create our installation. After picking deforestation, I used initial concept ideas regarding our final product to create a collage. Then we translated these ideas into a series of small-scale 3D model mock-ups. I studied our installation in shape and form, exploring different forms of stumps, what would be inside of the carved stump, and if we wanted anything sticking out of the stump. Lastly, I used Adobe Illustrator to illustrate a black and white sketch of where the installations would be and what it would look like. These steps were crucial in creating our final installation and helped guide us on how to make our ideas realistic and feasible.

FINAL INSTALLATION

Our final installation delivers a visual representation regarding the neglect and destruction of wildlife and habitats as a consequence of deforestation. The stump itself portrays a clear result/indicator of deforestation. Our installation represents a severed limb; when you cut into a tree, you simultaneously cut into the flesh and bone of a living being. This is represented by the distinct red and white color pattern of the paper. Furthermore, the rolled paper imitates the natural rings of a tree while also illustrating that paper is a leading product of deforestation. The animal print fabric that is wrapped around the stumps represents specific animals that are being endangered due to deforestation. In our installation, we specifically highlighted tigers and leopards. Viewers are encouraged to interact with the stumps and are welcome to take a seat on them, just as we might interact with wood or stumps for leisure. The death and destruction of forest wildlife and habitat is something that is widely ignored; perhaps we are sitting right on top of it without even knowing.
